Icosahedrophilia Special Edition, Episode 1: Journey through the Silver Caves, Part 1
The first-ever Icosahedrophilia Special Edition arrived today! The first round of Special Editions feature actual play audio from Worldwide D&D Game Day: Monster Manual 2, held on May 23, 2009. This event featured the adventure Journey through the Silver Caves by Logan Bonner. I’ll present the adventure in four installments. Please listen to Special Edition 1 now or subscribe via iTunes. This episode features the following segments:
- The Staging Area: I give a little background on the event, and introduce the players.
- The Weather Report: The PCs pursue a kobold wyrmpriest who has stolen a magic book.
- The Prop Shop: I share a snippet of exclusive preview content from Dungeon Master’s Guide 2!
The Staging Area
Wizards of the Coast provided the adventure Journey through the Silver Caves, by Logan Bonner, specifically for use on Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Game Day: Monster Manual 2, May 23, 2009. I gathered with other players at A Hidden Fortress in Simi Valley, and after a bit of time socializing and organizing, we got down to business.
The Weather Report
Like most one-shot modules, Journey through the Silver Caves gets PCs directly into the action. Wizards of the Coast’s Worldwide D&D Game Day 2009 page provides this blurb, along with character sheets for the five pregenerated characters we used:
A kobold wyrmpriest has stolen an ancient book of prophecy from the people of Albura, a fortress on the borderlands. The kobold has a dark plan for the book – and only you can stop him in time!
As players, we didn’t really have much more information than that when we began the adventure. We started right outside the cavern entrance, charged in, demanded the book, and fought for our right to parley. You’ve heard (or can hear) the results in the podcast episode.
If you’d like to see a map of the first encounter area, please click here. Note: This map includes notations for the placement of the enemy creatures we fought in part 1: O for “orc,” D for “drake,” and K for “kobold” (as if you couldn’t figure that out for yourself).
The Prop Shop
In association with the Tome Show, Fist Full of Comics and Games, Critical Hits, Dungeon Mastering, Geek Dad, the Chatty DM, and At-Will, Icosahedrophilia is proud to bring you exclusive preview content and special coverage of Dungeon Master’s Guide 2!
In this episode, I detail another example of a terrain power. WotC gave us a sneak peak at terrain powers back on August 28; this episode’s Prop Shop reveals another terrain power that appears in Dungeon Master’s Guide 2. You’ll want to read the WotC preview or listen to this episode’s Prop Shop to get an idea of how terrain powers work, but here’s the stat block for the boulder terrain power:
