Stormhaven Campaign

Welcome to the resource site for the Stormhaven campaign, my current D&D 4e game! I maintain this site primarily for the campaign’s players, but we invite all interested parties to look over our shoulders and onto our gaming table.

Background

StormhavenReaders familiar with the world of d20/OGL publishing may recognize the name “Stormhaven.” I’ve based the initial setting for our campaign on the city of Stormhaven as described in Stormhaven: City of a Thousand Seas, a d20/OGL supplement by Mongoose Publishing. The mysterious city of Stormhaven “floats” about 300 feet above the sea, supported by four huge pillars known as the Fingers of God. The current populace of Stormhaven remains ignorant of its origins; their ancestors colonized the ancient, empty city after Captain Palanas Rockhammer, his first mate Illias Seawillow, and the rest of the crew of the Broken Promise happened by (mis)chance upon the city many generations ago.

Our group has upgraded to D&D 4e for this campaign, and in keeping with the “points of light” motif put forward in the new D&D rules, Stormhaven might be considered a point of light on a darkening sea. The description of Stormhaven’s robust mercantile activity given in the Stormhaven book applies to the past, and trade with the cities and kingdoms (now largely decrepit) that surround the Moonshale Sea has dwindled significantly. Havenites press on and try to live up to their proud heritage, but this has become increasingly difficult as the economy worsens and feels more and more like just shuffling money around internally.

In the first adventure of our campaign, Stormhaven was invaded by strange creatures from the sea. The powerful wizard Gretchen VanFleet teleported our heroes aboard the Broken Promise to somewhere far to the east of Stormhaven, and charged them to find the Book of Life, from which they could learn a ritual that would allow them to “drown it back to sleep.” Before Gretchen was whisked away by pink winged fungoid polyps, she told the PCs to look for the Book of Life in a place whose name begins with the syllable /ka/ or /kǝ/. Our heroes are currently on that quest to find the correct Ka-place, to find the Book of Life, to learn the ritual, to return to Stormhaven, and to “drown it back to sleep” and save their city—and perhaps the entire world.

Players and Characters

Character (Player) Miniature
Alanso Heslock, male human rogue (created by David Dillard, played by Matt Bush). Alanso was an up-and-coming burglar who was hired to sink the Broken Promise during its ceremonial voyage on Founder’s (i.e., New Year’s) Day in the year 678. However, he found himself aboard the ship instead, and has become a valuable member of the crew. Alanso’s crewmates, though, are not too sure about his honesty, and fear (or it is envy?) the attention Alanso has received from extradimensional entities …
Jacques de Villaret, male human paladin (Matt Kalish). Jacques took a leave of absence from his job as a sea agent with the Underwriters’ Guild in order to explore his gods’ will for his life (those gods being chiefly Bahamut, and secondarily Moradin and Corellon—the Triumvirate). Little did he know how far absent from Stormhaven that leave would take him, when Gretchen VanFleet commissioned him to defeat the menace threatening Stormhaven. Jacques’ quick-tempered shipmates have gotten him into situations that weigh on his conscience …
Lithian Orbmu Seawillow, male elf ranger (created by Jacob Michael, played by Tim Rogers). Lithian’s Seawillow name earned him a place—whether he wanted it or not—on the Broken Promise’s ceremonial trip in 678, and as its first mate, no less. With archery training from the Griffon Guard Reserves, Lithian is an able fighter, and the crew’s chief source of martial artillery. Whether the Broken Promise cares that a Seawillow still rides its decks and leads its crew is anybody’s guess …
Serv0, male warforged barbarian (Steve Maiorca). Serv0 (short for “Servant Zero”) knows nothing of his racial heritage or of his personal history. As far as he knows, he’s the only one of his kind. A few years ago, a band of kroola pirates found him mostly buried in the muck of a small, swampy island off Karvahl’s northern coast. Since then, he has served these pirates, but has chafed under this servitude. Quick-tempered and heavily armed, Serv0 can be a valuable ally, or a rash and dangerous one …
Tyria Silverspray, female half-elf warlord (Jay Parmelee). Scion of a minor trading family with ambitions to build a great trading guild out of the wreck of her father’s ship, the Sea Falcon, Tyria should be first mate of the Broken Promise. With a Rockhammer and Seawillow aboard, though, she’s been relegated to third place. Her leadership skills frequently help her allies out of difficulty …
Zebith, male drow sorcerer (Sam Parmelee). This mysterious wanderer attached himself to the PCs in Scalabar, offering his services as a local guide (though he himself is native to one of Karvahl’s wilder reaches). Cautious to a fault, even suspicious—and not without reason, given the rashness of the Broken Promise crew—Zebith is quick to ask about the logic of a course of action, and quick to look out for his own skin … Zebith
