Generating Israelite and Canaanite Names

Your character in any RPG needs a name. In the Testament setting, you might want to give a little more attention to names than in other RPGs, if only because some ancient Israelite and Canaanite names tended to be “miniature theologies.” You can communicate something meaningful about your vision for the character—or your character’s parents’ vision for them—by your choice of name.

This page gives you some tools for creating Israelite and Canaanite names, if you want the help. Hebrew and the surrounding Canaanite dialects were very similar, as were naming practices in these cultures, so the same basic procedures will generally work for both types of cultures.

You might have already looked through Testament’s tables 12-2 and 15-1 for name ideas. These charts contain good suggestions, but they don’t tell you what the names mean or how to derive your own for a desired meaning. Also, they follow typical English Bible spellings, which may lead you to inauthentic pronunciations. (See the Semitic Pronunciation Guide for more information.)

Step 1: Choose Your Naming Style

Decide whether you want a name with a translatable meaning, or a purely phonetic name.
